How it works
Two crystals, one chemical formula
Calcium carbonate crystallises in more than one arrangement. The two that matter industrially are calcite and aragonite. Both are chemically identical. The difference is entirely in how the atoms are stacked, and that difference decides whether you have a scale problem.
Calcite forms a dense crystal that nucleates on solid surfaces and grows into a hard adherent layer bonded to whatever it started on. That is scale as anyone who has opened a fouled heat exchanger would recognise it, and it insulates roughly fifty times better than the steel underneath.
Aragonite forms needle shaped crystals that prefer to nucleate on each other in the bulk water rather than on surfaces. The result is a fine suspension carried along by the flow, which settles in low velocity zones such as a tower basin and leaves with ordinary blowdown.
ScaleOff steers which one you get. As water passes through the chamber it meets a large number of favourable nucleation sites, so seed crystals form in the body of the water before it reaches the heat exchanger. Those seeds then attract further precipitation, drawing it away from the pipe wall.

Heat transfer stays clean
Condenser and heat exchanger surfaces keep their design coefficient, so approach temperature and compressor energy do not drift upward across the season.

Because the treated water is no longer in equilibrium with deposits already on the wall, scale that has formed gradually redissolves rather than continuing to build.
Higher cycles of concentration

Water chemistry is unchanged, so the thin protective carbonate film still forms on pipe walls. Fully softened water removes that film and can unmask corrosion.

No dosing chemical, no salt and no brine effluent means one less chemical store, handling procedure, spill risk and discharge consent on the site.
Safe for potable supply
Nothing is added to or removed from the water, so treated supply remains fit for drinking and for food contact duty where dosing would not be permitted.

This category attracts overclaiming, so it is worth being precise about the limits. Being clear about them is how you avoid specifying the wrong product.
It is not a softener
Hardness stays in the water. Boiler feed, dyeing and laundry duty need genuine ion exchange softening.
It is not a biocide
Bacteria, algae and biofilm control in an open circuit remains a separate matter needing its own dosing.
It does not cut dissolved solids
Blowdown is still needed to control cycles of concentration, though the acceptable cycles are usually higher.

Does ScaleOff use magnets or electricity?
No. ScaleOff is catalytic. Treatment happens through direct contact between the water and a treated surface inside the chamber, which provides the nucleation sites. There is no magnetic field, no electrical supply and no moving parts. Some catalogue names in this market still carry the word magnetic for historical reasons, but the mechanism is catalytic.
Does it remove hardness from the water?
No, and this is the key distinction. The calcium and magnesium remain in the water at the same total concentration. What changes is the crystal form they take when they precipitate, so they stay suspended rather than bonding to hot surfaces. If your process genuinely needs hardness removed, such as boiler feed water, you need an ion exchange softener instead.
How long before results are visible?
Prevention of new scale begins immediately. Removal of existing deposits is gradual and depends on how thick the scale is, the water temperature and the circulation rate. On a fouled condenser, operators typically see approach temperature begin to improve over several weeks rather than days.
What maintenance does the unit need?
None beyond visual inspection. There are no consumables, no filters, no moving parts and no power supply. This is the basis of the ten year guarantee and the reason the running cost after purchase is nil.
Will it control bacteria or algae in my cooling tower?
No. ScaleOff addresses scale, not microbiological growth. Biocide dosing and good basin housekeeping remain necessary in any open recirculating cooling circuit, and conditioning does not replace them.
How is the unit installed?
It is fitted inline in the pipework, usually on the condenser water line or the incoming supply, with flanged or union connections depending on size. There is no bypass loop to balance and no electrical work. Our engineers handle installation and commissioning.
