Setting it up on site

  1. 01

    Setting out on the raised base

    Cell centres were set out on the raised base so the return header could run underneath the tower into the plant room rather than around it. Fan stack and ladder positions follow from those centres, so they are fixed before anything is lifted.

  2. 02

    Shell and internals

    Moulded FRP panels were bolted up cell by cell, then PVC film fill and drift eliminators were loaded from the fan deck down. Louvred inlets went on last, once the fill was seated.

  3. 03

    Distribution and header

    Distribution laterals were levelled across each cell and the nozzle pattern checked dry before water was admitted. The blue header was then tied into the campus chiller circuit.

  4. 04

    Commissioning

    Fans were run up and motor current read against the design figure, flow was trimmed across the three cells until they shared duty evenly, and the tower was handed over on a measured cold water temperature.

  1. 01

    Shared basin first

    A single basin carries all four cells, so it was set and levelled before any shell work began. On a shared basin the level is what decides whether the cells draw evenly later, which is why it is checked across the full length rather than cell by cell.

  2. 02

    Cells raised in line

    The four counter flow cells were built up along the basin, each one completed with its fill and drift eliminators before the next was started, so the crew worked at one height at a time.

  3. 03

    Fan stacks and access

    Each cell took its own fan stack and drive, which lets the plant run two cells at part load instead of throttling all four. A single ladder serves the common fan deck rather than one per cell.

  4. 04

    Commissioning to staged load

    Cells were commissioned individually and then together, with fan current and water balance recorded at each step, so the plant knows what it gets from one, two, three and four cells running.

  1. 01

    Position set for a second tower

    The cell was positioned with the expansion unit already allowed for alongside it, so the second tower could be added later without moving pipework or losing the air gap between the two.

  2. 02

    Square cell assembly

    A square plan suits a tight utility yard because it packs against a wall on two sides. The shell was bolted up on its base, then fill and drift eliminators were loaded before the fan deck went on.

  3. 03

    Tie-in to the utility line

    Supply and return were taken into the existing bottling line utilities, with the make-up and overflow set so the basin holds its working level without running to drain.

  4. 04

    Handover with spares on site

    Spare PVC fill was left stacked at the plant. Fill is the item most likely to be wanted at short notice in a bottling plant, and having it on site avoids a lead time in the middle of a season.

Setting it up on site

  1. 01

    Terrace positions

    Both units were set over the load bearing lines of the terrace. FRP shells are light enough to carry up and assemble in place, which is what makes a terrace installation practical without bringing a crane to the works.

  2. 02

    Two shells, two circuits

    The bottle tower and the rectangular unit were built as separate machines rather than as a pair sharing a basin, because the point of the installation is that either can be taken out of service on its own.

  3. 03

    Independent pipework

    Each tower was piped to its own circuit with its own isolation, so a fill clean or a fan repair on one leaves the other carrying the plant.

  4. 04

    Changeover proven

    Both circuits were run and then swapped over at handover, so the plant has seen the redundancy work rather than being told it is there.

  1. 01

    Erected into a live construction programme

    The tower went up while the plant around it was still being built, so the sequence was driven by when the plinth was released to us rather than by our own programme.

  2. 02

    Matched cells

    Cells were built to one specification rather than sized individually, which keeps the spares holding small: one fill profile, one drift eliminator, one fan and motor across the whole row.

  3. 03

    Specified for a coastal site

    An FRP shell and PVC internals were specified rather than timber or mild steel. On the coast, salt laden air is what shortens tower life, and neither material corrodes in it.

  4. 04

    Commissioning

    Each cell was proven on flow and fan current, then the row was balanced together before the plant took it over.

Setting it up on site

  1. 01

    Cut-in point chosen

    The unit was cut into the pumped header downstream of the pump, so everything going to the field passes through it and there is no bypass leg to balance.

  2. 02

    Fitted to the flow direction

    The body carries a directional arrow and was fitted to it. A conditioner installed against the flow does not fail visibly, it simply stops working, so this is checked before the flanges are pulled up.

  3. 03

    No supply to run

    There is no power connection and nothing to dose, which is what suits it to a pump house at the head of an irrigation line where there may be no reliable supply and nobody attending daily.

  4. 04

    Baseline recorded

    Incoming hardness was recorded at commissioning so the site has a figure to compare against when emitters and pipework are next inspected.

Alongside private industry, we supply government and defence projects under a PAN India approval from the Military Engineering Services, and we have exported engineered cooling systems to the United States and Brazil.
